Californication is an American comedy-drama that premiered on Showtime on August 13, 2007. The show was created by Tom Kapinos. The protagonist, Hank Moody (David Duchovny), is a troubled novelist whose move to California coupled with his writer’s block complicate his relationships with his ex-girlfriend Karen and daughter Becca. Californication’s other main characters are Karen van der Beek (Natascha McElhone), Rebecca “Becca” Moody (Madeleine Martin), Charlie Runkle (Evan Handler), Marcy Runkle (Pamela Adlon), and Mia Cross (Madeleine Zima). The show has been nominated and won several awards including winning one Emmy Award (nominated for two others) and one Golden Globe Award (nominated for three others). Californication has aired for two seasons. The third season began airing on September 27, 2009 and received a 57% increase in ratings. Due to this rating spike, the show has been renewed early for a fourth season.

Californication revolves around Hank Moody (David Duchovny) a famed novelist haggled by personal demons. Since he moved to Los Angeles, his life has been a roller coaster of ups and downs. Beginning with A Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Hollywoods crappy adaptation of his prized novel God Hates Us All, trouble flooded into a place: a terrible case of writers block, major plagiarism and dependence on alcohol, available drugs and sex.
However, Hank gets back on track when he meets Lew Ashby, world-famous record producer who commissions him to write his biography . What does fortune send him this time? His book subject overdoses leaving him scrambling once again. Now, trying to resist temptations and show his family that he can be a responsible and caring father, Hank starts afresh as the new writing professor at a local university at least apparently.

The mother of Hanks teenage daughter, Karen van der Beek is a talented architect who cant hide her frustration when it comes to Hanks lack of will to say no to temptations, grow up and end his immature behavior. However, Karen recently left Los Angeles for a major project in New York. Can she trust Hank to care for their daughter in her absence?

A quick-witted youngster, Becca witnessed both her parents on-again, off-again relationship and her fathers roller coaster lifestyle. She has seen it all. Although a very wise girl for her age, thanks to a new best friend with a taste for trouble, Becca tries his fathers patience more than ever. After going through a few hapless incidents, Charlie Runkle, Hanks best friend and agent, is next door to a divorce. Can he find a way to rekindle romance with Marcy, a brash salon owner? Remains to be seen The third season of Californication begins on September 27.
